A New Ireland: Politics, Peace, and Reconciliation by John Hume, The views of Irish peace activist John Hume on politics and the future of his country, with a foreword by Senator Edward M. Kennedy -- Reveals the inside story of the author's meetings with Gerry Adams, which led to the Irish Peace Initiative and the 1994 cease-fire Part autobiography, part political memoir, and part blueprint for peace, A New Ireland recounts the 25-year personal history that eventually led John Hume to broker the 1994 cease-fire, still the touchstone of efforts to reconcile the warring parties in Northern Ireland. Hume draws a compelling picture of the six years of discussions and risks taken with Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams that resulted in the Hume/Adams peace initiative. He describes in detail his vision for Ireland's future as well as his nonviolent approach over the years and how it can help achieve lasting peace. If the 1996 resumption of bombings by the IRA is to be overcome and ongoing peace realized, Hume's prescription for nonviolent change through democratic means remains the most promising approach to the "Irish troubles".
