Inniskilling Diaries 1899-1903 by Denis M. Cassidy,
The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers were traditionally recruited in Northern Ireland and the regiment has survived to the present day as part of the Royal Irish Regiment. The outbreak of war with the South African Boers in 1899 found the regiments 1st Battalion on home service in Ireland. An uneventful sea voyage to South Africa was a deceptive prelude to the British Army's first grim experience of modern warfare, the shabbily-dressed Boers proving to have very up-to-date German rifles and artillery. The Inniskillings war service has uniquely been captured by surviving diaries of two officers and a private, preserving not only major actions but the daily life of the regiment. The Inniskillings served in the war's major battles, on a few occasions trading shots with Irish and Irish-American volunteers serving with the Boers. The diaries trace the Boer War to the bitter end, as increasing numbers of British troops spent their time manning blockhouses, stringing barbed wire, and serving with mounted patrols. These experiences later proved valuable to the diarists, all three of whom served with the Inniskillings in World War I.
